1955
de Geest was established in 1955. The early years focused mainly on home
building and light commercial construction.
1970-74
Between 1970 and 1974 de Geest became involved in the Upper Waitaki Power
Scheme where they supplied 549 individual houses to help build the town
of Twizel. These houses were fully constructed and finished on an assembly
line in a factory, transported to site, and lifted onto their foundations
by crane.

1977-79
Between 1977 and 1979 de Geest supplied 350 houses to Cromwell (Upper
Clutha Power Scheme). However, a subtle change took place in the construction
method employed. In this case, an innovation that has since been refined
and developed to enhance many different situations.

The innovative method was the assembly of houses on-site from factory manufactured components. Complete wardrobe and bathroom units (areas of high labour content), along with wall and ceiling units were constructed in the factory, transported to site, assembled, and completed with a minimum of on-site labour.
1983
30 units were transported to Lake Gun Motor Inn at Te Anau. This was the
first use of pre-built bathrooms by de Geest on their own project.

1985
